Muslims in Academia is a global initiative founded in Toronto in 2024, and federally incorporated as a non-profit in Canada (est. 2026). We are a community-driven movement committed to building a more diverse, representative, and inclusive academic world, one that reflects voices, histories, and intellectual traditions from across the Islamic world.
MIA exists to support current Muslim scholars and academics, strengthen networks across disciplines and institutions, and engage communities beyond the university to foster a culture that values scholarship, research, and critical inquiry. We recognize that academia does not exist in isolation; it both shapes and is shaped by the societies it serves.
We believe knowledge is a collaborative human effort, and the responsibility for producing and sustaining it should be shared equitably. Representation in academia influences which questions are asked, whose experiences are studied, and how knowledge informs education, policy, and social change.
Our mission is to empower, educate, and connect. Through mentorship, networking, advocacy, and community-facing initiatives, we create spaces where students, researchers, and faculty can grow together, lowering barriers, amplifying underrepresented voices, and encouraging future generations to pursue academic pathways with confidence and purpose.
Support Muslim scholars, researchers, and students at all stages of their academic journeys through mentorship, visibility, and access to peer networks.
Build meaningful academic networks across disciplines, institutions, and countries to encourage collaboration, shared learning, and collective growth.
Engage Muslim communities beyond the university by demystifying academic pathways and highlighting the social value of research and scholarship.
Amplify Muslim perspectives in academia to shape research agendas, policy, and public understanding.
At MIA, we build communities grounded in shared values, mutual respect, culture, and intellectual curiosity. Through student chapters at universities around the world, we create spaces for meaningful connection, collaboration, and mentorship.
Education and academia are central to our mission. We engage students, families, and wider communities in understanding how research, knowledge, and critical inquiry drive meaningful progress, with the aim of fostering a lasting culture of learning and collective empowerment.
We are guided by a strong commitment to openness and inclusion. MIA welcomes individuals from all backgrounds, disciplines, and identities, regardless of the degree or expression of their religiosity. What unites us is a shared appreciation for knowledge, Islamic intellectual traditions, and learning in service of positive impact, within academia and beyond.
